Civil War history on Charleston real estate is well known, but the roots here go all the way back to colonial times. Established in 1713, the Powder Magazine sits as the oldest building in South Carolina and played a vital role in Revolutionary days. Once the main black powder storage site for the city, canons and other military memorabilia on site will keep history buffs busy. Tours of this little museum are offered for free with other area agencies including Charleston Strolls, Old Walled City Walking Tours, and Charleston Pirate Tours. Walk ins from Charleston homes are also welcome and only charged a small admittance fee. Museum hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m.
