Come tour historic Charleston property and visit Boone Hall Plantation. This farm has been in operation since 1681, when Major John Boone came from England and founded the estate. In 1955, the McRae family purchased the Charleston property. The house was outfitted with period furniture, and Mrs. McRae led tours. Since then, the McRaes have continued to work at restoring the house and grounds so guests can get a real idea of plantation life. There are several tours that explore aspects of life at Boone Hall. Go through the house with a knowledgeable guide, then hop on a carriage to see the grounds. Learn about the life of the African slaves on the plantation, too. See “Exploring Gullah Culture” to experience a live show which exhibits the culture of the slaves. Eight original slave cabins hold the “Black History in America” exhibit.

Visitors will see butterflies in all the stages of their lifecycle. The plantation continues to produce crops. Come to the u-pick fields for strawberries, tomatoes, and pumpkins, among others in season. People who live in Charleston can get fresh produce close to the plantation at Boone Hall Farms Market.
